Sue Westwood port

Sue is a socio-legal and gerontology scholar. Her research focuses on ageing, gender and sexuality in regulatory contexts. While completing her PhD at Keele School of Law (2010-2014), Sue also taught on several of the School’s courses (Tort, Family Law and Safeguarding). Sue was also a contract-based researcher on a range of funded research projects: Public Health & Feminism (Professor Michael Thomson & Professor Marie Fox, AHRC funded); Duties to Care Dementia (Dr Rosie Harding & Dr Elizabeth Peel, British Academy funded); Revaluing Care Project (Dr Rosie Harding & Ruth Fletcher, AHRC funded); Gender & International Law (Dr Zoe Pearson & Dr Sari Kouvo, commissioned by Routledge); Geographical Space & International Law (Dr Zoe Pearson, funded by Keele University).

Between 2015 and 2016, Sue was an Associate Lecturer at Coventry University Law School (Tort and EU Law) and, in conjunction with Coventry University, at the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Chongqing, China (Tort) (2016).  She combined this with a range of contract-based Research Fellow positions, including at the University of Leeds, University of Oxford, and University of Surrey. She was also a critical reader for the Open University. Between 2014 and 2016, Sue was an Honorary Research Fellow with the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender, University of Surrey. She is a member of the Socio-Legal Studies Association, the Law and Society Association, and the British Society of Gerontology. Sue's first book, 'Ageing, Gender and Sexuality: Equality in life', won the SLSA early career book prize for 2017.

Sue is a member of the Research Centre for Law, Ethics and Society (CLES) and the Keele Centre for Ageing Research (KCAR).

Research Interests

Sue’s research interests are in relation to:

  • Ageing, gender and sexuality in regulatory contexts;
  • Feminist care ethics in relation to the care of older people;
  • The regulation of death and dying, particularly in older age;
  • The operation of anti-discrimination law in closed care spaces for older people; 
  • Care rights and resources tensions in community care contexts.
