Biography

Dr. Maria Tzanou received her PhD from the European University Institute. She also holds an LLM in European Law (University of Cambridge), a Master in Public Law (Universities of Athens and Bordeaux IV) and an LLM in Comparative, European and International Law (EUI). In 2010, Maria was a Hauser Global Fellow at New York University School of Law.

She holds a PgC in Teaching and Learning in HE (Keele University) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In 2018, Maria was awarded the Routledge/ Association of Law Teachers (ALT) Teaching Law with Technology Prize for successfully devising and implementing a research-led approach for teaching the interaction between law and new technologies.

Research and scholarship

Maria’s research interests lie in EU constitutional and human rights law, privacy and data protection, counter-terrorism and technology law. Within these broad themes, her current research focuses on big (health) data and AI; constitutional questions regarding the rights to privacy and data protection; surveillance; international and comparative data privacy regulation and emerging technologies.

Her monograph, The Fundamental Right to Data Protection published by Hart in 2017 examines the added value of data protection as a fundamental right in the EU and assesses this right’s normative capabilities within the context of communications metadata, travel data, financial data and Internet data surveillance.

Maria is happy to supervise PhD research in the following areas: privacy and data protection, the GDPR, big data, AI and human rights, surveillance and privacy.
