gsl symposium 500 A MOMENT IN TIME?

A Keele Symposium on Gender, Sexuality, and Law Research

Friday 16th June 2017
Salvin Room, Keele Hall
Keele University
10am - 4pm

In the very moment that we act, time as we know it is suspended … the course of history suddenly begins anew, a story, never known or told before is about to unfold. – Hannah Arendt, On Revolution

This year marks two important moments in time: the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales and the 50th anniversary of Keele Law School.

On Friday June 16th 2017, Keele Law School will host a symposium with scholars who wish to mark the convergence of these political and institutional moments. In particular, these shared anniversaries provide us with an opportunity to reflect on Keele Law School’s distinctive contributions to the field(s) of Gender, Sexuality, and Law (GSL) research and to map out some future directions for research, activism, and collaboration.

We have designed this event to facilitate conversations on the history, present, and future of GSL research. We want to encourage reflections on the institutional histories of GSL research alongside broader discussions on the limits and opportunities of such research in our current moment. We hope these discussions will spur further opportunities for research dialogue and collaboration. This is not an event for scholars to present formal papers. Instead, we will be inviting scholars to take part in a mix of mini panels, workshops, and roundtables.

This is a free event to attend and open to any scholar interested in GSL research, though spaces are limited. Keele Law School may be able to contribute to transport and accommodation costs (priority for funding will be given to postgraduate and non-tenured researchers).

If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Senthorun Raj. If you require some assistance with travel
expenses, please add a statement of your costs.
