The School of Law and School of Pharmacy both successfully gained bronze awards in the 2017 round of assessment under the Equality Challenge Unit Athena SWAN Charter.

Professor Alison Brammer, Head of the School of Law and Sarah Lane, Senior School Manager attended the Awards Ceremony at Glasgow University with Dr Carolyn Voisey and Maureen Lowe, Senior School Manager from Pharmacy (pictured).  The applications were led by Athena SWAN champions, Professor Marie-Andree Jacob for the School of Law and Dr Carolyn Voisey for the School of Pharmacy with support from colleagues.

The following particular points of good practice were noted at the ceremony in respect of each school. In relation to pharmacy,

‘Returners are provided with research backfill time to ensure that they remain active researchers, this includes, where necessary, employing temporary staff to cover teaching commitments,’

And for law,

‘Work of head of school to recognise gendered issues in workload allocation. In future a systematic analysis of workload according to gender will take place at the time of annual appraisals and appropriate adjustments will be made.’

Both schools will now focus on implementing these and many other matters from their Action Plans with a view to seeking Silver accreditation in future.
