New 12-week Citizens Advice Bureau placement module

From September 2018, Keele Law School will be offering final year students an opportunity to undertake a 12-week credit bearing placement with the Citizens Advice in Stoke-on-Trent. The placements will enable some of our students to be in the privileged position of assisting some of the most vulnerable members in our society whilst enhancing their employability skills in a supportive, inclusive volunteer work environment. The Citizens Advice assists and advices in a diverse range of socio-legal areas including debt, employment, asylum and immigration, housing, family and consumer.

Our students will be supported and supervised by staff at Citizens Advice as they work towards becoming digital/initial advisers. It is hoped that in the fullness of time some of them will stay on with the Citizens Advice as volunteers and become full advisers.

Having undertaken an intensive induction programme, a series of telephone assistance observations and supervised telephone assistance, our students will be answering telephone queries by themselves and in some instances assisting members of the public face to face, finding out what a client’s problem is and helping them understand self-help information so the client can act for themselves or make an appropriate referral.
