I am Professor of Accounting and Head of Accounting Group at Keele Management School. Before joining Keele, I was a Professor in Accounting at Hull University Business School where I acted as Co-Director of the Centre for Accounting and Accountability and Programme Director of the Institute of Applied Ethics from 2012-2013; Professor of Accounting at Queen’s University Belfast, Management School from 2000 to 2012; and the University of Sheffield Management School as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and then as Reader from 1988 to 2000.

I also have extensive international teaching experience at postgraduate level and on executive courses in countries such as Germany, USA, Denmark, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, Oman and Hong Kong.

I was an Associate Editor of The European Journal of Finance from 2000 to 2013 and is currently an Associate Editor of Accounting Forum. I initiated, organised and contributed to the European Accounting Association’s (EAA) funded research methodology seminars entitled “Early Career Academics’ Research Development Program” designed for developing research skills of accounting lecturers from the Eastern European countries.

I have raised and/or contributed to research funding approximately £1 million from research councils including Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), ESRC, European Union, SERC, ICAS and the World Bank.

I have published consistently at an outstanding level, some in “A” ranked international Accounting and Management  journals including: Accounting and Business Research; Journal of Business Finance and Accounting; International Journal of Accounting; British Accounting Review; European Journal of Finance; British Journal of Management; Journal of Management and Governance; Financial Accountability and Management; Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal; Public Money and Management; Accounting Forum; Critical Perspectives on Accounting and Journal of International Business Studies.  I have published over one hundred refereed and professional journals and has edited, authored and/or co-authored six books

My earlier research focused on Performance Measurement and Control particularly in Multinational companies and Short- termism and Innovation.  More recently my research has been focused on the use and the impact of accounting information in the Private and the Public sectors, especially in Public Private Partnerships with interests in Accountability, Value for Money and Governance issues.

I am interested in supervising new PhD students who have research focus on the impact of accounting information - both in the private and the public sectors - on organisational behaviour, control and change management.  Other areas of potential PhD research supervision include Short-termism and Innovation, Corporate Governance, Multinational Accounting and Control, and the impact of IFRS or other governance regimes in developing countries.

Only includes publications since 2000.
