PhD student, Yiwen Lin (KMS/CASIC) presented a research paper at the 16th International Symposium on New Technologies for Urban Safety of Mega Cities in Asia (USMCA2017) organised under the auspices of the World Bosai Forum/International Disaster and Risk Conference, held in November in Sendai, Japan.

The paper reports on fieldwork carried out in 2016 in Minami Sanriku, where Yiwen volunteered and researched for three months the communities affected by the 2011 Tsunami. The fieldwork was sponsored by a Sasawaka Foundation grant.  In the picture attached, she can be seen with the mayor of Minami Sanriku who welcomed her back to Minami Sanriku, an area that has rebuilt from within through community based interventions, a topic addressed in the conference paper and a recent journal paper: Lin Y, Kelemen ML, Kiyomiya T. 2017. The role of community leadership in disaster recovery projects: Tsunami lessons from Japan. International Journal of Project Management, vol. 35(5), 913-924
