I received my first degree, BA Hons in English with American Studies at St Johns in York, after which I spent six years as an English teacher and teacher-trainer in Tokyo. I returned to the UK in 1996 to complete a PG Diploma in Cultural Representation and establish a new career. I completed a PGCE, joined the Education programme team at Stoke-on-Trent College in 1998, later leading the Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development team, designing and delivering the University Certificate and PGDip (Further, Adult and Higher Education) awards with Staffordshire University.

To support my work in academic development, I completed a PG Diploma in ‘Advancing Pedagogy’ with Oxford Brookes University and then secured an LSIS research fellowship that allowed me to explore joint practice development as a tool for teachers’ continuing professional development. This work lead to a Master’s Research Degree with Distinction in Education at Sunderland University.
