Pluralising International Relations with the Global IR Agenda

Abstract

How global is International Relations really? The discipline of International Relations (IR) has long been criticised for its Eurocentric foundations, methodology, and outlook. At the International Studies Association (ISA) Convention in 2014, the ISA President, Amitav Acharya, promoted a new Global IR agenda constituting of Six Dimensions, seeking to globalise the IR discipline. This presentation will first define International Relations and Eurocentrism. It will then explain how Eurocentrism remains a challenge for scholars and students of IR. Finally, it will outline the attempt by Acharya to globalise IR and to shift the discipline away from its Eurocentric foundations.
