Making space for reading in practice-focused programmes

Moira Maguire, Brid Delahunt, Ann Everitt Reynolds | Dundalk Institute of Technology

Deep reading forms the bedrock for professional development in most fields. Practitioners read to enhance their practice, and this is explicitly recognised and valued within many professional development frameworks. Yet academic reading is typically less visible in the curriculum than academic writing and research skills and its development generally receives less attention. This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to consider the ways in which academic reading is situated in practice-focused curricula and how this might facilitate or impede future professional development. Drawing on examples from a range of disciplines and levels, the workshop will consider the question ‘What messages about reading do our curricula send our students?’ Participants will share practices and explore practical ways to make space for deep reading in practice-focused programmes.
