Use of journal articles as assessment resources in Chemistry at Keele University

David McGarvey | Keele University

As paradigms of professional conventions and practice, journal articles (and the means by which they are accessed) form the basis of a range of (non-dissertation) distinctive and authentic assessments in chemistry at Keele from 1st year to final year. This includes the use of databases to access specific journal articles, the use of journal articles to support development of students' scientific reporting skills and the use of journal articles as resources for information retrieval exercises, presentations and advanced data analysis and interpretation. This contribution will explore how journal articles offer a vehicle for a wide variety of purposeful authentic assessments that are adaptable to various academic levels (and disciplines).
