GCSEs to Undergraduate: Managing student transition

Alison Croasdale | University College London

This workshop will consider examination specifications from English Literature GCSEs and A-Levels, and chart how required student reading might be transitioned across these phases for a successful and productive entry into undergraduate level. Led from the perspective of a practising KS4 and 5 teacher, the session will explore how to build academic reading practices in from KS4 as a way to not only aid the transition through to university academically, but also to aid students of English Literature in becoming critical in their reading, so that they are able to develop a level of articulacy in their contextual and critical writing. The practical element of this session will centre on the demands of the current GCSEs and A-Levels, and how to teach academic reading in a way that is relevant to students at each point, whilst also teaching good practice that has relevancy through to undergraduate level.
