Cerys Cooper, Accounting and Finance, 2019

Why did you choose to study accounting and finance Keele Business School (KBS)

I’m local to Keele, which allows an easy commute. I’ve always had an interest in business, due to family members setting up their own. I knew the student satisfaction rate was very high and the percentage of students achieving good level jobs after graduating was impressive.

What do you enjoy most about studying at KBS?

The diversity of the modules, i.e. essay based, mathematical based questions and the support offered by module leaders, specifically running up to assignments. Also, being able to use software such as Bloomberg to aid study.

Can you tell us a bit about your current part time job and how your degree is helping you in this role and vice versa?

I am currently a finance assistant at Wychwood Park Hotel and Golf Club. I spend my time executing audit functions in order to ensure the accuracy of the accounting systems and controls that are in place, reconciling daily banking for multiple departments, representing the accounting department within monthly food and liquor stock takes, keeping control of depost/guest ledger, but inparticular sale ledger, assisting to secure revenue by verifying and posting receipts while chasing aged debt. I have a very flexible manager, who allows me to work around Uni as long as I completed my hours. It's easier to relate certain modules such as The Audit Framework to what I already do at work, making modules easier to understand and being able to apply practice to theory.

I always put my uni work first and have support from family. I make sure that each week I was up to date with uni work, allowing me to revise and not have to re-learn the work before exams.

What plans do you have after graduation?

Take a few weeks off then jump straight into a full time roll within accounts. Potentially as a financial assistant with opportunity to progress to financial supervisor within three months.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at KBS?

If you enjoy the diversity of theory and maths then KBS is ideal and the course enables you to use real software such as STATA and Bloomberg, enhancing your experience.
