Biography

I studied philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at Oxford University before working in the motor industry for a number of years. After studying for postgraduate degrees at the London School of Economics and Warwick University, I worked in two polytechnics before coming to Keele in 1988. From 1989 I played an important role in establishing and maintaining Keele’s distance-learning programme (Certificate, PG Diploma and MA) in Industrial Relations.  I was a member of the Keele University Senate in 1998–99 and 2004–10 and on the Keele University Council 2008–10.

My main research interests are strikes, the history of health and safety, motor industry industrial relations, and labour history generally. I was founding editor (in 1996) of the journal Historical Studies in Industrial Relations, continued as chief editor until 2012, and still remain an active member of the editorial committee. I was on the executive committee of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association from 2004 to 2010, and have been on the executive of the Society for the Study of Labour History since 2002.
