Biography

I hold an MSc and PhD in Computation from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). I also hold a BA(Hons) Business Studies (Birmingham) and diplomas in Marketing and Market Research. I have worked on various UK and European research projects and held research grants totaling £4.5m from funding bodies including EPSRC, DTI, ESRC and EU Framework Programmes. I have published widely and for over 25 year focused on the socio-technical implications of advanced ICT utilisation within the areas of social network technologies, mobile computing and collaborative working.

To date, I have graduated nine PhD students. My contribution to the transfer of academic research into industry has been recognized by the UK Government and I was previously a member of the UK Government’s Digital Economy Advisory Board.

Before choosing an academic career I worked as a systems architect managing large scale system developments for ICI, BP Oil and IBM Australia.
