Biography

I’m an experienced, friendly, well-qualified ‘Cello Teacher, Chamber Music Coach and Chamber Musician based in Madeley, Staffs (close to Keele University).

I’m particularly interested in teaching and correcting technique properly and tailoring lessons individually in order to enable students to play to the very best of their ability and so enjoy music-making to the full. I’m also interested in helping those who have physical difficulties, such as arthritis, to adapt their playing accordingly.

I’ve been teaching ‘cello at Keele University since 1999 and have also coached chamber groups and taken orchestral sectionals there.

All ages/abilities (including adult beginners) are welcome. I have a very flexible approach to lessons/coaching sessions for adults and advanced students who cannot or prefer not to attend on a strictly regular basis, and one-off or occasional lessons/coaching sessions are available.

If you’d like help with any aspect of technique, fingerings and/or bowings for any solo/chamber/orchestral parts, or help choosing a cello/bow or strings, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I studied ‘cello with Bernard Gregor-Smith (and also received quartet coaching from Ronnie Birks) at Manchester University, then post-graduate performance with Mike Evans at the Royal College of Music.
