Daniel Jackson - South Africa placement
My elective was in Johannesburg, based in Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital; one of the largest in the world.
During my time there I was able to experience nearly every aspect of Physiotherapy! I had the opportunity to cover orthopaedics and trauma, amputees, outpatients, neurology and ITU (to name but a few!). The Physiotherapy educators at the hospital were excellent and Keele provided great support throughout ensuring all aspects of the placement went smoothly.
Living accommodation was in Wits Junction, one the student halls of the University. There was also time to experience the culture and sights of South Africa.
The highlight for me though was the vast amount you’ll see and the clinicians and patients you work with in the hospital - an experience like no other! A very good placement for developing your clinical knowledge and skills. I found it to be a great transition in becoming an autonomous practitioner as a qualified Physiotherapist.
