    Course Overview

    This module will enable existing Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)-registered specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) practitioners to expand their knowledge and skills to achieve SCPHN competencies in either 0 - 5 years for registered school nurses, or 5 -19 years for registered health visitors, therefore extending their professional practice to a 0 - 19 years service.

    Overview

    This module will enable existing Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)-registered specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) practitioners to expand their knowledge and skills to achieve SCPHN competencies in either 0 - 5 years for registered school nurses, or 5 -19 years for registered health visitors, therefore extending their professional practice to a 0 - 19 years service.

    The module includes theoretical learning as well as practice assessment of SCPHN standards of practice. Once successfully completed, practitioners will have the knowledge and skills to work in a 0 - 19 years SCPHN service or in a service within their alternate age range. Practitioners should note that initial NMC registration as either a health visitor or school nurse is retained, and this conversion programme does not alter this to add an additional registration.

    Module aims

    This module aims to create and provide clinical learning of competencies in practice which enable existing Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)-registered specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) child health practitioners to expand their professional practice from their current focus to a wider age-range of 0 - 19 years.

    Entry requirements

    Must have successfully completed a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registered Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme at Level 6, Level 7 or equivalent.

     

    Module content

    Indicative content includes:

    • Child health and development relating to the alternative age range requirement
    • SCPHN Standards of Proficiency
    • Reflective Practice
    • Undertakeing health assessment & identification of needs; clients, families, groups
    • Safeguarding across the 0 - 19 years age range
    • Working in partnership to improve health and well-being across the 0 -19 years age range
    • Make use of counselling, support, and related therapeutic techniques
    • Leadership, people and resource management
    • Problem solving and decision making in child health services
     

    Teaching and assessment

    The principal learning and teaching methods used in the module are:

    • Lectures, seminars and workshops: The core of each module delivery mode is a series of face to face tutor-led or group-led seminars or workshops.
    • Web-based learning using the Keele Learning Environment (KLE), Blackboard. 
    • Group work and peer support. All modules use focused group work and class discussions within face to face tutor time.
    • Directed independent study. Most of the study hours for each module comprise independent learning by expecting participants to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of topics, to practice skills and to reflect on critical incidents and their practice. 

    Attendance

    5 Days tuition & 50 days in placement 

     

     

    Please note: In your programme you may sometimes be expected to role play and engage in simulated clinical scenarios with other students, such as the practice and observation of practical skills in physical contact with other students. For some specific practices, this may necessitate modification of dress - e.g., to shorts and t-shirt. These activities will be conducted in a professional, safe, respectful and culturally sensitive way, under the supervision of academic staff, according to a defined protocol. This does not apply to Clinical Pharmacy practice modules as all of these modules are distance learning.
