This practice-focused module aims to equip rheumatological practitioners with the skills and knowledge to undertake a comprehensive clinical assessment and examination of the shoulder, knee and hand complexes. The module is designed to augment and enhance the student's assessment skills along with ability to apply their findings to clinical decision making relevant to rheumatological conditions.
The use of blended learning will be adopted which utilises focused lectures, skills teaching and practice, workshops, online learning along with the student's clinical practice experiences. This multifaceted approach will provide the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that underpin the assessment and management of rheumatological conditions of the shoulder, knee and hand complexes.
It is expected that at the end of this module students will be able to accurately and effectively undertake a patient / client assessment and clinical examination in relation to rheumatological conditions of the shoulder, knee and hand complexes. In addition, students will be able to evaluate their clinical findings and formulate an effective management plan.
- All candidates will have a nurse or AHP qualification, current registration with the NMC or appropriate HPCP body, and significant experience of the routine management of patients presenting with rheumatological disorders.
- Candidates will normally have either a degree or an equivalent professional qualification such as a postgraduate diploma, and appropriate clinical experience.
This module will include the following elements of knowledge and skills acquisition in relation to rheumatological conditions of the shoulder, the knee and the hand complexes:
- Related anatomical terms and practical anatomy of the specific complexes.
- Principles, theories and models of clinical history taking, managing the consultation and comprehensive patient assessment.
- The principles and procedure of clinical examination of the shoulder, knee and hand complexes.
- Advanced understanding of common rheumatological problems of the shoulder, knee or hand.
- Skills to formulate a comprehensive patient focussed management planning in relation to their shoulder, knee and hand rheumatological disorders.
The principal learning and teaching methods used in the module are:
- Lectures, seminars and workshops: The core of each module delivery mode is a series of face to face tutor-led or group-led seminars or workshops.
- Web-based learning using the Keele Learning Environment (KLE), Blackboard.
- Group work and peer support. All modules use focused group work and class discussions within face to face tutor time.
- Directed independent study. Most of the study hours for each module comprise independent learning by expecting participants to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of topics, to practice skills and to reflect on critical incidents and their practice.
