Respiratory infections in childhood are ubiquitous. Every child has them but understanding when and how further action is necessary is important for all those working with children. This practical and innovative module aims to provide the knowledge required to safely and effectively manage childhood respiratory infection: discussing hot topics and emerging science.
The module content develops the students' knowledge of the diagnosis and management of respiratory infection(s) and the respiratory consequences of immunodeficiency states.
The intention isto highlight areas of uncertainty within existing guidelines and develop strategies to deal with thes and how to implement positive changes in clinical practice.
The module requires a reflective approach, and encourages reflection upon the literature, existing experience and the patient narrative.
This module requires previous training/experience within a relevant health profession. To register for this module, students must have completed or currently be enrolled on a programme of study within a relevant healthcare profession. Students do not need to be in a current clinical practice. Eligibility for registration onto the module is at the discretion of the module leader.
Guided independent study:
Participants will be guided through the important literature and asked to focus on literature which offers practical advice for management: 60 hours
Reflection on learning: 2 hours
Preparation of Case Study: 36 hours
Preparation of Essay including revisions as required in response to feedback: 36 hours
Lectures: 8 hours (1 full day)
Workshops: 8 hours (1 full day)
Case Study (maximum 2000 words)
It all started with a cough: the patient journey for a child with respiratory infection.
A case report of a child and family following the patient journey through the healthcare system focusing on patient experience, diagnosis, multidisciplinary management, morbidity and outcome.
Assessed skills will include, evaluation of the underpinning principles and methods used for diagnosis and management of respiratory infection, justification of decision making in the application of different treatment modalities used for treatment of infective respiratory disease e.g. bronchiolitis, pneumonia, protracted bacterial bronchitis, demonstration of the ability to reflect on practice and take account of patient experience. It should also include, where relevant, examples where care has deviated from strict guidelines or where there is a difference between possible application of available guidelines due to the heterogeneity seen in clinical practice. For those not in clinical practice the faculty will make exemplar cases available.
Essay (maximum 2000 words)
Dealing with uncertainty in respiratory infections.
An essay describing an area of clinical uncertainty in respiratory infection and how to proceed when there is limited evidence to support treatment. This might include the use of prophylactic antibiotics in children with persistent or recurrent moist cough, newer technology such as HFNCO in bronchiolitis or the merits and demerits of surgical intervention in empyema. This will include background information on type of treatment and controls needed, clinical audit and outcomes of trials in relation to health service budgetary constraints, e.g. costs of treatment and service provision. It should critically address how barriers to implementation of best practice can be overcome.
