Before the Day
Invitations to Winter Graduation have been emailed.
All graduands wishing to attend a graduation ceremony and order the maximum of 4 guest tickets, need to register by 5pm on Friday 14 December 2018
Please note, if you do not register that you are attending or wish to defer your graduation to a future ceremony, you will automatically graduate in absentia. Graduating in absentia constitutes conferment of your award and you will not be eligible to attend future ceremonies.
Please ensure you arrive 2 hours before your ceremony time and report to K2 in the Students' Union to collect your tickets and gown. Tickets are free of charge.
Due to seating capacity, we can only allocate two of your four guest tickets to the Chapel. There is a video link-up room on campus which will live stream all ceremonies, for which your remaining two guests will have seats for.
Please note, graduands are automatically allocated their own ticket.
Additional guests without tickets are welcome to join us in celebrating your day on campus. All ceremonies are live streamed on plasma screens on the ground floor of the Students' Union. Please note, there may not always be seating available in these areas.
Outstanding debts to the University
All outstanding debt to the University should be settled by the registration deadline, Friday 14 December 2018.
If you have a debt to the University after the deadline date, you will not be allowed to attend the graduation ceremony.
Graduands are advised to speak with the Finance Department as a matter of urgency.

Visa letter for graduation
For graduands who require a visitors' visa letter from the Graduation Office to support their visa application, please email the Graduation Office once you have received your e-invitation. You will need to provide your name and student number to obtain the necessary paperwork for your visitors' visa application. All visitors' visa letters will be emailed back as soon as possible.
Please note, your visa letter will only state:
- your name,
- qualification and award,
- plus the maximum number of guests you are allowed.
We do not include visitor names on your visa letter.
Academic dress and ordering your gown
Graduation ceremonies are a formal occasion, which is reflected in the dress of graduands and their guests. Graduands are expected to dress formally and wear appropriate academic dress (robes). Graduands should wear:
- Trousers, shirt and tie
- Smart dress
- Blouse with skirt or trousers
Academic dress should be ordered from the University’s gown hire suppliers Ede and Ravenscroft via their website. The portal will become available after you have received your e-invitation to graduation.
The deadline for ordering your gown is Friday 14 December 2018.
Most graduands choose to hire their robes for the day; however, you can purchase robes if you wish.
- Wearing a shirt and tie or a blouse with buttons will make it easier to fix the hood of your academic dress.
- Hair pins are useful to secure the mortarboard (hat).
- Safety pins can be used to secure robes and hoods.
