Welcome to the MSc Environmental Sustainability & Green Technology from Dr Sharon George, the course director.
We’re delighted that you’ll be joining us in September to study the MSc in Environmental Sustainability & Green Technology.
We hope these Welcome Web pages give you much of the information you need before you come to Keele, but if you have any questions at all do please contact me or the course administrator, Karen Babb.
You’ll receive information from the university about arrival, enrolment and Welcome Week activities, but the “Your first week” tab here will give you details of what we have planned for you.

Before you arrive
If you’re keen to get started on some reading to prepare for the course I can recommend the following key texts:
- David J.C. MacKay, Sustainable Energy ? Without the Hot Air (Paperback and online)
- Coley, D., 2008. Energy and Climate Change. Wiley-Blackwell
- Houghton, J., 2009. Global Warming: The Complete Briefing. 4th ed. Cambridge University Press
- John Twidell, Tony Weir (2005), Renewable Energy Resources, Taylor and Francis
The David MacKay book is available online and is a great place to start.
Your first week
Your first week will give you the opportunity to settle into Keele and to meet the staff and your fellow students.
You’ll have information from the university about general Welcome Week activities – the sessions below are specific to the MSc Environmental Sustainability & Green Technology and they’re compulsory for all new students.
During this week we’ll give you your course handbook, your finalised course timetable, and you’ll have talks from the option module leaders to give you the information you need to make your option choices.

Monday 25 September
10:00-10:15, come to the Sustainability Hub to register with the School and meet your fellow students.
10:15-11:00, your MSc Environmental Sustainability & Green Technology introductory talk will tell you everything you need to know about the course
11:10-12:15, past MSc ESGT students will talk to you about their experience
12:15–12:45, informal lunch for students and teaching staff
12:45-13:15, 2016/7 students talk about research projects
13:15-14:15, plagiarism, professional writing and referencing and your first assignment!
14:15-14:30, all about the KPA including optional visit
Tuesday 26 September
10:00-12:00, talks by option module leaders
12:30-13:30, KRISP and SEND projects industry placements
13:30-13:45, the English Language Unit
These sessions will take place at the Sustainability Hub, where a lot of your teaching will take place this year.
