Research Opportunities on Industrial Placement

This project will both develop new knowledge about existing geophysical techniques, and work on real study sites with the industrial sponsor. Commercial companies often have limited time to complete their site investigations, with problematic issues frequently occurring which there is limited time to investigate. Your task will be to investigate one of these, to solve particular problems (e.g. numerical modelling of gravity anomalies), and to improve existing techniques (e.g. acquisition of square array electrical resistivity data). You will also gain experience onsite in a commercial company.

This project would suit someone who has an interest in near-surface geophysical investigations and wanting a career in geotechnical and/or environmental companies. Ideally, we would be looking for a student with field experience, basic geophysical theory and practical skills. The placement will probably be based at Head Office in St. Albans.

RSK STATS Ltd. is a commercial company, one branch concerned with the Geosciences, including geotechnical, geophysical, geoenvironmental and geohazard consultancy, which also has in-house drilling apparatus and a UKAS-accredited laboratory, which provides soil, aggregate, rock and concrete testing.

You will also gain experience onsite in a commercial company.

Ideally, we would be looking for a student with field experience, basic geophysical theory and practical skills. The placement will probably be based at their office in Nottingham.

This project will examine the shallow marine epiclastic deposits of the Nant Valley, north Wales in an attempt to understand their relationship to contemporaneous eruption of volcanic material and the influence of significant, but episodic, sediment influx into the marine realm.

This project will attempt to reconstruct in three dimensions the geometry of complex and multiphase folding and faulting in the Ordovician succession of the Nant Valley, north Wales, and the rheological influence of clastic and igneous deposits upon the structure.

A suite of sediment cores, spanning the Holocene, have been collected by BGS from sites at Barking, Rainham, Swanscombe and Tilbury on the Thames Estuary. 14C dating suggests the ages range from 2000 up to 8000 yrs BP consequently these cores offer a wealth of information regarding palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimate as well as palaeosalinity. For example a recent combined geochemical-microfossil study of one core by Khan et al., 2015 identified tidal flat-low marsh, mid-high marsh, reed swamp and fen carr environments and produced three sea level index points.  However, the foraminifera, diatom, ostracod, pollen distributions remain unexplored in the other cores. This project would allow students to assess environmental change in the Thames Estuary using one or more of the above proxies.
