Biography
Guido studied Geology at the University of Jena, Germany, receiving a Diplom (M.Sc.) in Geology in 2002. After working in various projects at the University of Jena and as a freelancer for the Geological Survey of Thuringia, he became a doctoral student in the DFG-funded Graduate School 392 (Composition and Evolution of Crust and Mantle) at the University of Mainz in 2003. He obtained a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in Geology in 2007 with a study on the provenance of sedimentary rocks from the Internal Hellenides of Greece. In 2008, Guido joined CASP in Cambridge, UK, as a geologist exploring during several field campaigns remote parts of the Sahara Desert in southern Libya. In 2010, he took a position as a lecturer (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit) at the University of Göttingen. Guido was awarded the Hans-Cloos-Prize by the German Geological Society (Geologische Vereinigung) in 2013 for his "outstanding contributions to the palaeogeographic and tectonic reconstruction of Northern Gondwana and the Palaeotethys by means of sedimentary provenance analysis". Guido gained his Habilitation (Facultas Docendi) in Geology from the University of Göttingen in 2016. He was appointed as a lecturer in Geoscience at Keele University in 2017.
Research and scholarship
Guido's research interests are broad and include mainly aspects of sedimentary provenance analysis, tectonics and sedimentation, basin analysis, regional geology, and palaeogeography. At present, his main research themes are:
- Palaeogeographic and geodynamic evolution of North Gondwana and its periphery throughout the Phanerozoic
- Palaeogeographic and geodynamic evolution of Baltoscandia with focus on the late Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic
- Environmental changes at the dawn of animal life
- Testing the reliability and improving methods and tools in sedimentary provenance analysis
- Research towards exploration of natural resources
Past and present study and field areas of his research are in North and Northeast Africa (Ethiopia, Libya), Middle East (Iran, Saudi Arabia), Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Turkey), Northern India (Jammu and Kashmir state), Central Europe (Austria, Germany), and Baltoscandia (Norway, Sweden), among others.
Guido is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London (GSL) and a regular member of the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft ‒ Geologische Vereinigung (DGGV) and the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS), among other societies. Guido is one of the three founding members of the annual international "Sedimentary Provenance Analysis" Short Course, which is held at the Geoscience Center of the University of Göttingen since 2011. He is a member of the Basin Dynamics Research Group and a member of the Editorial Board of "Geological Magazine" and "International Journal of Earth Sciences".
