The Merapi volcano in Indonesia

Dr Ralf Gertisser, Senior Lecturer in Mineralogy and Petrology, together with Dr Ralf Halama, received a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) award for facility time at the NERC Ion Microprobe Facility in Edinburgh. The award (£8,750) is for pioneering work measuring in situ carbon and oxygen isotopes in calc-silicate crustal xenoliths from Merapi volcano (Indonesia). The study, which also involves Sean Whitley, PhD student within the Keele Petrology Group, will help to quantify chemical transfer between carbonate country rock and magma, and to better understand the processes that occur during magma-carbonate interaction. Such processes are considered crucial in generating powerful and hazardous explosive eruptions at some of the most dangerous volcanoes worldwide.
