Having earned a BA in English and American Literatures, I went on to study for a Masters in Creative Writing, which I just recently completed. Through this PhD, I am hoping to explore further the themes and avenues that I studied at undergraduate and Masters level: motherhood, feminism, life writing, Québécois fiction, écriture féminine. I am also looking to complete my most ambitious creative project to date: a novel which marries fiction, life writing and feminist theory in a bid to ‘write the feminine’.

My novel will explore a woman's relationship to her mother and grandmother, both single mothers, as she finds herself facing a similar fate. My thesis will look at alternative families and will problematize Nancy Chodorow's theory of the reproduction of mothering, arguing instead for a process of rejection and reconciliation, which I will apply to mother/daughter relationships but also to second and third wave feminism and to the relationship between mother tongue and second language.

I am co-supervised by Emma Henderson and Dr Ceri Morgan.
