As part of your course, you can enhance both your understanding and your employability by taking one of our Global Challenge Pathways (GCP). Alternatively, you can enhance your language skills and cultural knowledge by studying a language (see the 'Language Options' section).

Global Challenge Pathways give you the opportunity to:

  • Present your ideas and outputs to employers, organisations and communities
  • Build a powerful digital showcase to carry your learning and achievements with you
  • Link your studies to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

You will also be able to take part in research-driven and external-facing projects which address current controversies and debates.

You can start a GCP at Level 4 or Level 5 of your studies, however to receive the GCP certification you must complete Levels 5 and 6 of the pathway. You can swap pathways at the end of Level 4 but not at the end of Level 5. Although you can opt out of studying a GCP pathway at a higher level of study, you will then no longer be entitled to obtain GCP pathway certification.

At Keele we have a policy of language for all, even if you have chosen a GCP, you can still enrol on one modern language module per semester free of charge (up to a maximum of 60 credits). You can choose from the list of individual language modules at the bottom of the page.

Alternatively, instead of taking a GCP pathway, you can choose from three Language Centre Pathways:

  • The Language Specialist
  • The Language Taster
  • The Certificate in TESOL

All three pathways will provide you with the key, transferable skills which will enable you to understand and interact effectively with people from different counties and different cultures. Importantly, these are skills which we know will enhance employability.

Visit the Language Centre to find out more and to enrol.

Languages and Intercultural Awareness (TESOL)

This pathway will train you to teach English as a Foreign language (TESOL / TEFL) and provide you with an additional, globally recognised English language teaching qualification.

This route leads to the Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL which means that you will get an additional, internationally recognised teaching qualification as well as your Keele degree. It's a lot of fun - you don't need to speak a foreign language and you get to work with Keele's international students as well as students from partner universities in Japan, and with asylum seekers and refugees through our contacts with local charities.

Keele has been running this programme for twenty years and our graduates have used this qualification to work in countries all over the world including Japan, Thailand, Italy, China, Brazil, Spain, and more.

Languages and Intercultural Awareness (Language Taster)

This pathway offers you the chance to explore a new language every year. This will allow you to develop a broad appreciation of different language families and enable you to engage in basic communication whilst also providing a window into diverse cultures around the world.

Please note: British Sign Language is not available on this pathway

If you choose to take a Modern Language pathway you will need to be assessed to ensure that you have registered on the correct module level. To download and complete the self assessment form click here

Languages and Intercultural Awareness (Language Specialist)

You can either start any of our languages from absolute beginner, or pick up and continue from where you left off earlier. Perhaps you have already done a couple of years of Spanish, or you may have GCSE German or A-Level French - you will be able to start at that level and carry on developing your language skills. For British Sign Language you will be eligible to take the nationally recognised 'Signature' Exams.

If you complete 60 credits and reach a high enough level, you may be eligible to graduate with an enhanced degree title with the designation of 'with competency / advanced competency in e.g. French'.

If you choose to take a Modern Language pathway you will need to be assessed to ensure that you have registered on the correct module level. To download and complete the self assessment form click here
