Education for sustainability projects

Responsible Futures

Keele was part of the initial pilot cohort in 2014-15 when the NUS Sustainability team launched Responsible Futures. The Responsible Futures programme aims to embed education for sustainability across university and students' unions through a whole institution approach, bringing together the curriculum, co-curriculum activities, and wider campus operations and stakeholders. By adopting a whole-institution approach to embedding ESD, learning can be derived from all aspects of the student experience, for both students and staff who are involved in these projects and activities.

Keele was reaccredited in 2018 and 2020, demonstrating how staff across the University and Students' Union collaborate to deliver activities that engage students with a range of environmental and social sustainability issues and themes. At each reaccreditation, student auditors are trained to examine evidence submitted against the workbook criteria, and interview staff from key areas of the university with responsibility for embedding sustainability. The Responsible Futures team produces a report for Keele based on auditors responses and feedback, which enables reflection within the team and planning for ongoing developments to our education for sustainability work.
