KUSRN seminar - Prospects for the Blue Economy Approach in the Seychelles

Join us on Wednesday 8 November 2017 from 1pm-2pm in room 1.099 at Chancellor's Building when Dr Adam Moolna will be delivering his KUSRN seminar, 'Climate action, biodiversity conservation and social progress embedded in sustainability: prospects for the Blue Economy approach in Seychelles, Indian Ocean'.

The shortening of the term “ecological sustainability” from its 1980 introduction in the World Conservation Strategy is more than a rationalisation of words for a simpler term. When the 2012 Rio +20 summit brought “green economy” into global discourse too, did this represent how the focus of political leaders has been captured by economic considerations? This is the background for an ongoing commentary on the Blue Economy approach to sustainability, championed by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as is developing in the Republic of Seychelles. With an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.4 million km2 yet a land area of just 459 km2, coastal and ocean economics are central to Seychelles’ Blue Economy approach to sustainability. We will explore examples of renewable energy, novel financing for climate change adaptation (with input from Leonardo DiCaprio), conservation, spatial planning and more - and discuss the prospects for the non-economic in the Blue Economy.

All staff and students are welcome to attend this and other talks as part of the Keele University Sustainability Research Network Seminar series.

If you're interested in delivering a seminar in Semester 2, please contact Sarah Briggs, the University's Sustainability Project Officer for more information and available dates.
