British Pottery & Porcelain Presentations

Arts Keele, the Raven Mason Collection and the Northern Ceramic Society present a celebration of British blue & white porcelain and Staffordshire Potteries research.

Guest speakers John Sandon of the Antiques Roadshow and Pat Halfpenny, Chair of the NCS and former curator at the Potteries Museum and Winterthur Museum, USA are pleased to be speaking at Keele on British ceramics subjects in tribute to two leading authors in their fields, the late Dr Maurice Hillis and the late Rodney S Hampson.

John Sandon’s presentation at 11.30am is ‘Turning the airwaves blue (…and white): on the Road from Worcester to Liverpool and further’. John will focus on blue and white porcelain, the subject of the major work Liverpool Porcelain by Dr Hillis and related anecdotes from his time on the Roadshow Team. John will be delighted to take questions after his presentation.

The son of Henry Sandon, a noted authority on Royal Worcester porcelain, John Sandon went to work at auction house Bonhams (formerly Phillips), London in 1975, where he quickly established himself as a porcelain specialist. Since 1988 he has been the International Director of European Ceramics and Glass at Bonhams. John is a world authority on European porcelain and has written extensively on the subject. He has been involved in excavations at the Royal Worcester factory site and has written several books on the factory. John is a regular expert on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

Pat Halfpenny’s presentation at 2.00pm is ‘Etruria, Liverpool, Paris & London: Ralph Wedgwood and his siblings’. Pat presents her research in tribute to Rodney S Hampson MA, former staff member and Local History student at Keele University. Pat will also be pleased to take questions from attendees.

Pat specialises in the study of 18th & 19th century Staffordshire pottery and the Potteries. She began her career in 1967 at the City Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, where she was Keeper of Ceramics from 1980-1995. From 1995-2009 she served as Curator of Ceramics & Glass, then Director of Museum Collections Winterthur Museum, Delaware, USA. In 2013 she was appointed Curator Emerita, Ceramics & Glass, for Winterthur Museum in recognition of her scholarship.
