ANGLES is an artistic engagement in global health residence scheme, working with and for socially engaged artists around the globe who are committed to creative community engagement in health research. ANGLES is housed in Keele’s Institute for Global Health and runs in partnership with Arts Keele. ANGLES aims to exploit the synergies between the arts, engagement and global health research. This aligns with our mission to connect the ‘local’ with the ‘global’ and to further the development of creative community engagement in health research. Socially engaged art, which is collaborative and participatory in nature, is ideally placed to raise awareness of global health issues, to promote behaviour change and to influence health policy. ANGLES also provides a capacity building opportunity for artists committed to delivering policy-focused socially engaged art. ANGLES is led by Lisa Dikomitis, with Kerry Jones, Christian Mallen, Kay Polidano, Helen Price, Michelle Robinson, Deborah Thomas, Brianne Wenning and Steph Wright. ECLIPSE is a 4-year NIHR global health programme with the aim to improve the patient journey for people living with cutaneous leishmaniasis and empower communities to cope with the devastating effects of stigma that it causes. The ECLIPSE team are working in Brazil, Ethiopia and Sri Lanka. The teams are conducting fieldwork in some of the most underserved communities in these countries. ECLIPSE is underpinned by an anthropological approach and the ECLIPSE teams will co-develop, implement and evaluate context-appropriate and culturally bespoke community interventions to raise awareness and promote early diagnosis and treatment. ECLIPSE is co-led by Helen Price and Lisa Dikomitis, with 60 researchers, clinicians and artists based in Brazil, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and the UK. For more information click here

This exhibition includes work by ANGLES resident artists Martine Vandevelde and Raiça Bomfim. Vandevelde is a socially engaged artist with a track record of creative public engagement, an exhibition portfolio and over four decades of experience of working with vulnerable, marginalised groups, especially mental health patients. She implemented a range of social participation intervention models, especially around creative community engagement. Bomfim moves in the field of arts as a creator, producer and professor, traversing performance, theatre and literature. She is currently a PhD student in the Performance Studies Graduate Program at the Federal University of Bahia. Bomfim is primarily interested in the intersections between body, city, art, women and witchcraft. She frequently experiences related to voice as the starting point for her creative and educational processes, connecting meanings emerging from a poetics of water.

The ANGLES residency scheme is funded by Research England through QR Global Challenges Research Funding (GCRF). The ECLIPSE project is funded by the UK’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) with UK Aid. The ANGLES-ECLIPSE exhibition is generously supported by Research England through QR GCRF funding and the NIHR Global Health programme.
