Following the Government announcement on Saturday 31st October, Keele Sports Centre will close from 6:30pm on Wednesday 4th November. 

Following the lockdown period, we are hoping to welcome you back on Wednesday 2nd December, with all necessary COVID-19 procedures in place, so that you can enjoy a safe & secure workout.

We have been extremely busy preparing everything to welcome you back. Facilities are prepared, booking systems are developed and all relevant administration is undertaken. We would like to thank you for your patience as our team continue to work extremely hard to get everything ready for you.

On re-opening our main priority will, as always, be the safety of all of our staff, customers and the wider community. With the assistance of the University, the Government, Public Health England and numerous National Governing Bodies, we have developed a comprehensive Safety Operating Procedure that supports our COVID-19 Risk Assessment.

Thank you for taking the time to review all necessary documentation prior to attending the Sports Centre. Below are a few of the most significant changes, and the ways you can help us maintain a facility safe for everyone. 

What to expect

It is vital we are able to monitor and control entry in order to ensure that our building and departmental capacities are maintained. Capacity figures have been calculated based on a number of factors including floor space, air- handling systems, sporting and government guidelines and building structure. Therefore, we will be asking for, and will implement, the following:

  • Please only attend when you have pre-booked an activity. We will not be accepting ‘walk-in’ bookings on the day and so we thank you for not attending site without a reservation.
  • In order to maintain sufficient space for our members, bookings will be restricted to members at the current time.
  • Staff and Students wishing to take out a membership may do so by contacting reception and arranging an induction. Membership may be limited to ensure that we don’t go above safe capacity limits.At this moment in time we are not allowing external membership.
  • Please only attend at the time of your session and vacate the premises immediately afterwards. If you arrive early please wait elsewhere prior to entering the building. You must leave at the designated time even if your session began late.
  • All non-member access should be solely for activity participation (as part of a member’s booking) and so all entry will need to be made via Reception. The person booking the facility is responsible for ensuring that all rules, regulations and guidance are adhered to.
  • The Fitness Centre will also now need to be booked. Full details of how to do so will be included in the information to follow.
  • We will be moving to a cashless environment so please bring an alternative method of payment with you.
  • Parking Refunds will no longer be available.

  • Capacities for communal areas, including toilets, will be displayed. Users should adhere to these throughout each visit. Please only use communal areas when absolutely necessary.
  • A one-way system will be in place across the building with entrance at Reception and various marked exits depending on where you are visiting.
  • A member of staff will be located near the front of the building whenever possible in order to assist our users and help control entry.
  • Showers and changing facilities will not be open and lockers will not be available. Please attend ‘Exercise Ready’ and with minimal personal possessions.
  • You will not exit the same way as you come in and will need to walk around the outside of the building and back to the front if you wish to enter after passing through an exit point. This includes from outdoor facilities.
  • At the moment we will be restricting team sports usage to AU clubs only. Other sports use will be restricted to our Active Keele programme. These restrictions will ensure our students and staff will be able to access the facility and that we are able to effectively track and trace. The person booking the facilities is responsible for ensuring that the guidance and rules are adhered to. You may therefore only play with another student or member of Keele University Staff.
  • We will not be restricting the type of sporting activity unless we cannot safely do so, don’t have enough capacity or a National Governing Body (NGB) deems it necessary. However, all use will be permitted strictly on the understanding that the relevant NGB and Sports Centre guidelines will be adhered to. Appropriate Risk Assessments must be produced and updated with any changes prior to participation in sporting activity.
  • Some activity schedules and session durations have been amended in order to allow change-over and clean-down times to be incorporated.
  • Spectating will not be permitted, unless there is a specific need in order to comply with our child supervision policy or equal access policy.
  • Certain areas may be re-purposed and activities ammended.
  • We will be cleaning and disinfecting the sports centre more than ever in terms of both frequency and processes.
  • Air handling systems have been amended to rely on fresh air rather than re-circulation. This means that it may be more difficult to maintain our normal air temperatures. Please bear that in mind when choosing your attire.
  • Hand and hairdryers have been removed from use in all shared spaces while toilet facilities e.g. available urinals and sinks, have been reduced in order to ensure social distancing can be maintained.
  • We have installed a number of hand sanitiser units and additional wipe down kits and blue roll across the facility.

We will be unfreezing all memberships so that you can come back as soon as we reopen. As promised, we will ensure that you are credited for the days that we were closed from 21 March. Memberships will be extended by the period that was not available for use during our closure.

To help you restart your fitness regimes we are also pleased to offer you the period 14– 28 September completely free of charge.

We understand that some members may not be ready to return just yet, and so you have the option of extending the freeze on your membership for any duration up to 31 October 2020. Should you wish to undertake this option you must contact sport@keele.ac.uk by 5pm on Thursday 24 September 2020. Please note that if you do not inform us of this wish to continue on ‘Freeze’ then your membership will automatically reinstate from 28th September.

Due to the requirement to strictly limit capacities across all areas of the facility, the Fitness Centre will initially need to be booked (in timetabled slots) prior to attendance. We understand that this will be a significant change for our users, and that the removal of complete flexibility will take some getting used to. However, this is an essential component in enabling us to adhere to the current social distancing restrictions. Admittance will not be possible if you attend without a reservation. Fitness Centre sessions will be in 60 minute durations. At the current time, in order to maintain as much availability to our members as possible, non-member pay and play bookings will not be possible. Membership and all bookings at this time are strictly limited to Staff and Students of Keele University. It is the responsibility of the person booking to ensure these guidelines are adhered to.

How you can help

We understand that it will take some time to get used to some of these amendments but it is vital that we work together in order to ensure everyone’s time on site is as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Most importantly, it is essential that if you feel sick or are experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms, you do not come to the Sports Centre under any circumstances.

Specific area information

We are delighted to start to bring you specific information relating to each area as we approach our re-opening date. We want to make sure customers feel confident in whichever areas matter to them most. Listed below are the links to information regarding the areas and activities we are currently opening as these increase we will add further information.

When you are ready to return please make sure that you gradually increase your exercise again.

The team have deep cleaned all areas, including all the outdoor equipment and our grounds team have been busy maintaining our pitches so that you can be confident that everything is well maintained, clean and disinfected prior to your use.

As you might expect there will be several changes to the way in which we do things across all of our facilities. Although some aspects may seem unusual at first, and we understand that they may not be as flexible or convenient as normal, we hope that you will recognise their importance in providing the most safe and accessible use of the Sports Facilities possible. Please help to keep yourself, our team and your fellow users safe by adhering to all relevant guidance and usage information below.

General access and participation

In order to maintain social distancing, and maximise safety, we have had to adjust session times to allow a period for the safe arrival and dispersal of users. This means that the number of available sessions for outdoor sports has reduced across the day. We have large sporting areas, and a significant amount of space, meaning that it is not currently our intention to restrict any sporting use unless a National Governing Body (NGB) deems it necessary. However, it is important to understand that all use is strictly permitted on the understanding that you will review and adhere to the guidelines laid down by the relevant NGB.

  • Spectating will not currently be permitted and for that reason our seating areas will not be available until further notice.
  • All activity MUST be pre-booked.
  • We will NOT be accepting ‘walk-in’ bookings on the day and so we thank you for not attending site without a reservation.

In order to maintain sufficient space for our Students and Staff, external and non-member bookings will not currently be permitted.

Changing rooms and showers will not be open at the current time and there will only be a small number of pre booked personal lockers available (If you have a disability where this will cause a significant problem please speak to a member of staff who may be able to work through a solution with you). Please attend ‘Exercise Ready’ for all activities and with minimal personal possessions.

Although the running track will be available for use, sessions MUST now be pre-booked within a two- hour slot. You will be able to attend at any point within this time-slot you will be expected to leave at the advertised finish time without fail. We understand that this is unusual but it is essential in helping maintain safe capacities and be able to wipe down touch points between sessions.

We ask that those attending ensure they give as much space to each other as possible and they give two lanes width when passing another athlete.

Entry to the Sports centre is only by the main reception door with the exit to the outdoor facilities up the steps and then directly down the corridor to outside. There is a one way system in operation in the sports centre and although you cannot use changing facilities you will still be able to access toilets. There is no access at all from the rear of the sports centre so those wishing to enter must walk around the outside of the building.

We ask that you sanitise your hands on entering the building and also ask that you also bring your own sanitiser to allow you to sanitise during your sessions. You will be able to use the sinks in the toilets to wash your hands but will again have to follow the one way system to access.

When you are moving along pathways to pitches and outdoor areas please ensure that you keep following social distancing guidelines.

We would recommend keeping 2m gap as an absolute minimum and giving more distance between yourself and people outside of your ‘bubble’ whenever possible. Please take the time to assess other athletes sharing your designated area and, based on the training session that you are planning on carrying out, space yourself accordingly. We will be keeping to a maximum of 20 people.

Athletic Union Club sessions will be pre-booked and numbers attending must be strictly adhered to. To book a session with your club you must have read all of the National Governing Body guidance for your club and then produced any requested processes and documentation including a COVID 19 Risk Assessment. The numbers allowed for the session will be determined by National Governing Body Guidelines and the Risk assessments produced by the Sports Centre and the Club and will very much be dependent on a combination of these guidelines, activity taking place and available space. These will also be regularly reviewed as guidance changes. In Sports where Covid Officers are also required to review guidelines, any changes should be first agreed together with the Sports Centre and the AU prior to adjustments in play taking place as the Risk Assessments for the facility will be required to be updated in line with Club Risk Assessments again dependant of the previous factors.

No equipment use is permitted except for organised club sessions following strict equipment procedures. Touching equipment such as goals or nets should be avoided wherever possible, and all access gates will be left open to reduce touch points. Customers will need to open/close the main doors on the MUGA and Beach Volleyball Courts during use and we therefore suggest that you minimise the number of people touching these items and restrict to one individual whenever possible. We will also have to stagger and change the length of booking times in order to control footfall and to allow for cleaning between sessions. Please ensure that you strictly adhere to these times and ensure that your full party are aware of the need to minimise time on site and the information in this communication.

In outside areas we would like all participants to walk on the left hand side.

Thank you for being patient and taking your time to follow this slightly longer route in order to keep everyone as safe as possible. It is important that you only bring the number of players that you can safely retain within your hired space and as set out in the Risk Assessment (whilst adhering to social distancing and NGB guidelines throughout).

When attending site for all outdoor sports it is important that time on site is minimised on each visit and so we ask that all users are punctual and do not attend in advance of their allocated session. Please read our “Thank You Guidance” and adhere to this at all times and, most importantly, please only attend site if you are completely symptom free and have completed your checks prior to leaving your home not on arrival. In order to make everyone’s time here as enjoyable as possible, please make sure that you respect your fellow users and our sports staff at all times. 

We are looking forward to seeing you all back in the Fitness Centre from Monday 14 September. When you are ready to return please make sure you take the time to gradually increase your exercise again and feel free to speak to the Fitness Instructors if you need any guidance.

There will be several changes to the way we do things in the Fitness Centre. The team have deep cleaned the entire building, and particularly the Fitness Centre. From ceiling tiles, to weight stacks, dumbbells to treadmills, nothing has been missed. We have replaced areas of upholstery, invested in new flooring to allow us to expand our exercise space, removed hard-to-clean equipment from use, disinfected equipment and have re-trained all staff to ensure we are ready for you. You will be given your own cleaning pack, containing anti-viral/bacterial spray and the availability of blue roll and hand sanitiser for you to regularly clean down equipment, and yourselves, on your visits. Our team will be on hand to remind you of the importance of this – please ensure you help keep everyone safe by doing so. Please help the Fitness Instructors, and support your fellow users, by adhering to all relevant guidance and our usage information below.

Access and Participation - we have re-arranged equipment and have also utilised the gymnasium for Fitness use. Please respect all aspects of our premises and only place equipment, in particular weight-plates and dumbbells, on their designated storage units. DO NOT, under any circumstances, lean equipment against the walls or other surfaces. Please do not move any of the equipment including benches at any time as they have been situated to allow for safe use for all. Although we have extended the Fitness Centre floor-space, we have had to reduce capacity from 55 to 20 users. In order to ensure that this capacity is maintained, and to ensure all activity can be accommodated, use of the Fitness Centre MUST be pre-booked prior to travelling to the venue.

No walk-in bookings will be taken under any circumstances. The Fitness Centre will operate via a number of allocated workout slots with fixed capacities in place at all times. Bookings can be taken by following the booking link on our website. You will need your login details. If you have not used this service before or forgotten your login details please email sport@keele.ac.uk so that we can provide them to you. From the 14 September there will be a limited Fitness Workout timetable for three days per week increasing from the 28 September to 7 days. All of our bookable slots and time can be found on our webpages.

Please note that you may arrive at any time during your reserved slot but you will still be asked to finish your exercise on time, and vacate the Fitness Centre, at the relevant time. Under no circumstances will we be able to add time on to a session even if the beginning of the session has been delayed. In order to maintain as much access for our inclusive memberships as possible the non-member use of the Fitness Centre is not currently permitted. When attending the site it is important that time on site is minimised on each visit and so we ask that all users are punctual and do not attend in advance of their allocated workout time.

If you arrive early then you may be asked to queue outside of the building maintaining social distance until access can be permitted. If you have not booked a workout then you will unfortunately be refused access to Sports Centre. The changing rooms and showers will not be open so all users should come ‘Exercise Ready’ in clean fitness attire and with minimal personal possessions (If you have a disability where this will cause a significant problem please speak to a member of staff who may be able to work through a solution with you).

Our water fountains and filling stations will remain closed so please bring a water bottle with you or alternatively you will be able to purchase water from reception. Please do NOT bring a sweat towel. Sweatbands and headbands are allowed but not towels, blue roll will be provided.

In order to reduce the number of touch points required, please ensure that you bring your Keele Card with you on every visit and keep this with you throughout. This will allow entry into the building and the Fitness Centre at your allocated time.

Please leave the Sports Centre promptly once your exercise has finished and make arrangements to shower and change elsewhere. Please read Thank you guide and adhere to this at all times and, most importantly, please only attend site if you are completely symptom free.

We know that our class participants in particular have been missing the face-to-face sessions with our Instructors and so we have made some changes to ensure that as many of you as possible will be able to attend our classes again. Please make sure, that when you are ready to return, you take the time to gradually increase your exercise and speak to your Instructor if you need any additional guidance at all.

We have removed hard-to-clean equipment from use, disinfected equipment and re-trained all staff to ensure we are ready for you. Our team will be on hand to remind you of the importance of this – please ensure you help keep everyone safe by doing so. Access and participation - we have re-arranged equipment and have moved the location of most sessions in order to be able to maintain capacities as close to normal as possible. Capacities are based on a number of things including entry and exit routes, air handling systems, equipment availability and floor space. For that reason some of the larger classes have been moved to the main sports halls to provide sufficient space to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Please make sure that you are aware of, and understand, the access and exit routes for your sessions. Please do not enter the space until informed that it is ready and safe to do so. A one way system has been implemented across the building and we ask that your strictly follow this at all times. Unfortunately, for hygiene reasons, we cannot provide yoga or exercise mats for use at the moment. Therefore, those attending sessions will need to bring their own, although we will source some at a reasonable price so you may purchase one should you wish to assist you in this. We understand that in some activities the change in location may make it more difficult for us to provide the perfect air temperature for your activity. Air handling has been adjusted to comply with legislation and to minimise the risk of infection by utilising fresh air rather than re-circulation. For that reason we would suggest that, on your first session back, you wear a number of layers so that you can adjust as required and understand the most suitable attire for future visits.

Our timetable will have changed so please check when classes are. We have tried to keep some around Lunch time and after 5pm as they were popular times. However, some start times or session durations have had to be adjusted in order to allow sufficient opportunity for the safe entry/exit of participants and for adequate clean-down and return of equipment. You can find the current timetable on our website here. Although we have maintained most capacities as normal, it is more important than ever that we adhere to these. Therefore, use of classes MUST be pre-booked prior to travelling to the venue. No walk-in bookings will be taken under any circumstances. Bookings can be made by following the booking link. Throughout our enforced closure, we have been collating all the guidelines from the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of Sport guidelines alongside information released by the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). There will be restrictions on what activities can be booked, all use will be provided strictly on the understanding that participants agree to comply with Keele University Sports Covid-19 terms and conditions of use as well as any specific recommendations of the relevant sport’s governing bodies, whose links you can find below. Please ensure you have fully reviewed and planned for your activity before booking.
