How to apply

Whether your are a new Postgraduate student, or a current student returning for another year of study, you need to think about your options for student accommodation for the 2018/19 academic year as early as possible.

You will be sent an email with a link to an on-line accommodation application form once you have been made an offer of a place on a course. For new students starting a course in September the online application will be available from February 2018. You can only apply for accommodation after you have formally accepted your place at Keele as follows:

  • If your application to Keele was made through UCAS you will need to select your Firm and Insurance choice Universities - see accepting your offer through UCAS.
  • If you made a direct application, you will need to complete a return the acceptance/fee classification form which was sent with your offer to Keele.

We recommend that you apply as soon as you receive your invitation e-mail from the Keele Admissions Team. Please note it can take 3 working days for your record to be updated once you accept your offer of a place at Keele so you will need to wait before completing your on-line accommodation application.

You should submit your application as soon as possible. Accommodation offers are made from March onwards according to the Priority for the Allocation of Campus Accommodation. When you receive your offer of accommodation you will have 3 days to accept this – after which the offer will be withdrawn. If you do not like the room that is offered to you and you decline it, you will not be offered another room. If you accept the room, you can request a room move to try and change rooms after you arrive. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to change rooms as this is subject to availability.

Postgraduate accommodation is available for a period of 51 week occupancy period. It begins on the Saturday before the start of  the ‌academic year. If you are an international student you will be asked to arrive in the week before this for a short orientation period.

Campus accommodation is only available to full time students. All bedrooms are for single occupancy and are not suitable for ‌‌‌‌couples. There are a limited number of houses and flats for students accompanied by their families, but these are only available on a temporary basis and subject to availability. If you are coming to Keele with your family there is plenty of off campus accommodation available in the local area and we can assist you with this. Please contact accommodation@keele.ac.uk.

If you apply by the end of June (to arrive at Keele in September), you are given priority for an offer of accommodation. To secure a particular room type, you should apply early.

We cannot guarantee an offer of accommodation if you apply after the end of July. However, we do try to provide you with a room.

If you are made an offer of a room, you will need to send an advance payment of £450 to secure the room. £300 of this will be used towards payment of the first instalment of accommodation fees. The remaining £150 is a deposit, which is refundable at the end of the occupancy period. You will be given further information about how to do this this when you receive an offer of accommodation. There is no need to pay this until you receive your offer.

Email addresses

We will use your Keele email address for any correspondence. We will send mailings from accommodation@keele.ac.uk address. Please do set this address as a ‘safe sender’ to avoid losing important information from us into your spam folder.

Friends

If you want to live with friends you can apply as a group – maximum of 4 people BUT you must ensure when applying that you all use the same group name. It is very important that you all spell it correctly. Our system will not pick up group applications if there are typos or spelling mistakes. Try to make the name as simple and original as possible.

Study Abroad

If you are planning to study abroad next year, for either the 1st semester or the full year, please don’t apply for accommodation.

Contracts

Once the Agreement is accepted you have a 7 day 'cooling-off period'. This means that if within 7 working days of accepting the Agreement you change your mind and notify us by email of that fact, you will be released from the Agreement. The contract is legally binding and if you change your mind you will still be liable for accommodation fees. You can only be released from the contract in exceptional circumstances such as taking a Leave of Absence or Withdrawing from the University. You may transfer your licence to another student as long as the transfer is done with the knowledge and prior written approval of the University Student Accommodation Office. The new licensee should be a suitable replacement which means that the balance of sexes and nationalities is not adversely affected within the accommodation.

Debt

Please note that we are unable to offer accommodation to students currently in debt to the University. If you are offered accommodation and subsequently encounter financial difficulties, you will be expected to clear outstanding amounts due by the end of June. If this happens, you must discuss the situation with the Student Accommodation Manager. Failure to do this may result in us issuing notice to cancel the accommodation agreement.

How much will it cost?

Please see the accommodation fees section.
