This programme is designed to address the challenges of today and tomorrow in general practice.
It is jointly created and delivered by Keele Clinical Leadership Academy and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.
How do leaders in general practice ensure their practice is sustainable, and ready to succeed in a fast-changing NHS?
What options do practices have, and what benefits can ‘at scale’ organisations bring?
What are the pros and cons of federations, super-partnerships and limited companies?
How does general practice influence the emerging integrated providers that are being developed through the STP programmes?
Transforming general practice will require good leadership. This programme aims to help you understand how the NHS is changing, how to plan for the future, and how to improve your own effectiveness.
This course is designed for GPs and practice managers who are planning for the future, or taking up leadership roles in GP partnerships, federations, local provider networks, or new integrated organisations.
Outline of the Programme
Day One: The Organisation and System
Healthcare organisations are complex bodies working often in a complex environment. Unhelpful power and political behaviours can emerge, whether through hierarchy, ambition or competitive personalities.
Today we will explore how this may be playing out locally. Utilising power mapping and stakeholder mapping techniques we will explore the leadership challenges this presents, where the major influencers lie and how to work constructively with them.
- Welcome and Introductions

Course Dinner: Keele Hall is an atmospheric venue and the Old Library is the perfect setting for an informal course dinner, where we will be joined by an experienced GP to continue our conversation.
Day Two: The Individual
Leadership is about getting results with and through people…no people, no results! Doctors are always trying to improve their service and success needs a sophisticated ability to persuade, negotiate, and influence well. This interactive session will explore a range of techniques for improving effectiveness personally and collectively.
Includes an overview of the challenges facing leaders globally in the so-called VUCA world – volatile, uncertain, complex and uncertain.
