Description for 2021/22

This module introduces the students to social division and diversity and equips the students with the knowledge and skills to work with difference and disadvantage. The module will provide students with a knowledge framework to practise and engage with service users in an anti-discriminatory manner.
This module meets requirements set by the professional and regulatory bodies.

Aims
This module is intended to provide a basic understanding of the nature and impact of inequality and disadvantage in contemporary Britain and thus, develop an appreciation of the broader context within which social work is practised.
Specifically it aims to help students to:
- identify different forms of discrimination and disadvantage;
- begin to develop a critical awareness of how discriminatory processes affect social work practice;
- begin to develop an ethnically sensitive and anti-discriminatory approach to learning and practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

demonstrate an understanding of the social and legal processes that lead to marginalisation, isolation and exclusion and their impact on the demand for social work services: 1
describe the function of social work in a diverse society with particular reference to concepts such as prejudice, structural discrimination, empowerment and anti-discriminatory practice: 1
demonstrate an understanding of the nature and validity of different definitions of, and explanations for, the characteristics and circumstances of service users and the services required of them: 1

Description of Module Assessment

1: Presentation weighted 100%
Poster presentation
Students will complete a poster on an area of disadvantage that will account for 100% of the mark and discuss. This will include 15 minutes question and answer defending poster.
