Description for 2026/27

How can we know the world and the societies around us? This module introduces you to the core social science of designing, implementing, and analysing social phenomena. You will learn to identify and analyse data sources that might be used by social scientists in real world situations. From quantitative surveys to qualitative interviews and ethnographic studies, you will explore methodological approaches to understanding society and develop practical researcher skills that prepare you to carry out original research ethically.

Aims

To familiarize students with contemporary digital methods and platforms used in social science research, such as online surveys and digital ethnography, and explore their potential and limitations.
To prepare students for independent research by developing competencies in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, laying the foundation for future research projects, including final-year ISP modules.

Intended Learning Outcomes

design a coherent research proposal that demonstrates the ability to identify a research question, select an appropriate methodology, and justify its application.: 1
know how to operate quantitative research methods, such as survey design and statistical analysis, to collect, interpret, and present numerical data, demonstrating an ability to evaluate the reliability, validity, and implications of quantitative findings.: 1
analyse qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate techniques, such as thematic coding for qualitative data and statistical methods for quantitative data, demonstrating an ability to draw meaningful conclusions and critically evaluate the results.: 1
apply digital methods in social science research, including social media analysis, online surveys, and big data techniques, demonstrating an understanding of their potential, limitations, and ethical implications.: 1
develop strategies to address common challenges in social science research, including ethical dilemmas and methodological limitations, and demonstrate the ability to respond to unforeseen circumstances impacting research.: 1
develop a well-structured research proposal and know the process for producing a clear and coherent research report that effectively communicates findings.: 1

Description of Module Assessment

1: Research Proposal weighted 100%
Research Proposal
Students write a 2000 word research proposal that demonstrates knowledge of the philosophical underpinnings of social science research, ethics in research, the need to review literature, and apply the appropriate research methods in a design that responds effectively to a specific research question / problem.
