This module equips you with foundational understanding, knowledge and skills required when planning assessment, intervention and clinical management for clients who have communication difficulties associated with neurodevelopmental conditions. The module further examines the skills required to offer the support people with learning disabilities require whilst embracing the social model of disability and partnershipworking.Furthermore, this module considers assessment and management in fluency disorders across the lifespan.
Aims
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge of assessment and management options for individuals with long-term conditions within the context of the family and the broader social environment. Students will consider the role of the speech & language therapist within multidisciplinary teams.This module further aims to enable students to gain an understanding of different psychiatric disorders and their effects on communication.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Formulate and defend an assessment strategy and management plan for a highly complex paediatric condition.: 1Critically evaluate models of service delivery and assimilate relevant government policy documents and professional body position papers, applying your understanding of these to a clinical case.: 1,2Deconstruct the central role of caregivers in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities including the value and complexities of working in partnership with families.: 1,2Critically analyse the complexity of individual needs of adults with learning disabilities and evaluate the role of the speech and language therapist in providing appropriate support.: 2Construct and justify an evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of the communication and swallowing needs of adults with learning disabilities.: 2

Description of Module Assessment
1: Presentation weighted 60%Presentation30-minute presentation of a clinical case, to peers and examiners.
This is broken up into 20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes of questions from the examiner.
2: Assignment weighted 40%Written assignment2000-word written assignment. Students will be given a choice of three clinical referrals from which they will demonstrate their understanding of the SLT role, how to approach assessment of, and management planning for, communication and swallowing support needs for an adult with learning disabilities.
