Description for 2026/27

This module provides students with a detailed understanding of current approaches to assessment, differential diagnosis, intervention and management of school aged children presenting with persistent speech and language developmental disorders. Students will consider contemporary theoretical issues in, and apply current theoretical approaches to, speech and language therapy practice for this clinical population.

Aims
This module aims to provide students with a variety of opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding of the nature of complex and persistent developmental speech and language disorders in school aged populations. Students will consider the theoretical basis of, and the variety of approaches to, assessment and intervention and be aware of the importance of evaluating treatment efficacy.
This module aims to provide students with a variety of opportunities to gain requisite knowledge and understanding of diagnosis, assessment and management, in educational and bilingual/multilingual contexts. Furthermore students will further develop their understanding of the long-term impact of language disorders and the impact of speech sound disorder on literacy.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Critically evaluate approaches to, and current research in the field, in relation to assessment, differential diagnosis and the management of developmental language disorders in school aged populations.: 1
Review aetiological, prognostic and presenting features in Developmental Speech and Language Disorders.: 1
Examine and explain the role of speech and language therapy practice within an educational context.: 1
