Description for 2026/27

Speech and language therapists are required to be evidence-based practitioners. This module builds on content introduced in Year 1 of the programme and enables the you to acquire the skills to collate and evaluate relevant evidence sources. Understanding research methodology, statistical data, ethics and governance processes enables clinicians to judge the relevance of evidence to clinical and service delivery questions.
The module aims to introduce basic statistical knowledge and understanding of statistical tests and procedures enabling you to interpret research articles and design a detailed clinical research project. You will also develop your academic writing and gain formative and summative feedback on a literature review which will prepare you for your final research project.

Aims
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to analyse a range of research methodologies used within healthcare, with a particular focus on speech and language therapy. It seeks to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to locate, appraise, and critically evaluate published research and other relevant sources of evidence. In addition, the module aims to develop students’ understanding of statistical principles and tests, enabling them to interpret statistical issues presented in research papers.
