This module provides you with a detailed understanding of current approaches to assessment, differential diagnosis, intervention and management of children presenting with speech and language developmental disorders. You will consider contemporary theoretical issues in, and apply current theoretical approaches to, speech and language therapy practice for this clinical population.
Aims
The module aims to examine the theoretical basis of, and the variety of approaches to, assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children with speech and language disorders. Distinguishing language difficulty from disorder, the long-term impact of speech, language and communication disorders, working in educational contexts and the impact of speech sound disorder on literacy will be considered.

Identify aetiological, prognostic and presenting features in Developmental Speech and Language Disorders.: 1,2Examine current approaches to assessment, differential diagnosis and intervention in speech sound disorders.: 1Interpret speech sound disorder assessment data and solve clinical problems relating to differential diagnosis and intervention and communicate this information in an appropriate manner for a professional and non-professional audience.: 1Judge current research in relation to the diagnosis, assessment and management of pre-school children presenting with language difficulties.: 2Analyse approaches to, and current literature, in relation to assessment, differential diagnosis and the management of developmental language disorders in school aged populations.: 2Examine the roles and responsibilities of the speech and language therapist working with children who present with language, difficulties or disorders.: 2

Description of Module Assessment
1: Assignment weighted 40%Case studyA clinically relevant data-based case study. Students are supplied with assessment data, from a child with a speech sound disorder, which they must interpret, justify a speech target, plan intervention and provide a session plan for a carer. 1700 words
2: Exam weighted 60%Exam90 minute exam consisting of three sections. In section A and B apprentices must answer one question, from a choice of 2. Section A and B require short answers and do not require a formal essay style answer. Section A and section B are each worth 25% of the overall mark. In section C, apprentices must answer one question from a choice of 3, an essay style answer is required for this section. Section C is worth 50% of the overall mark.
