Description for 2025/26

A core element of a speech and language therapist working with adults with acquired disorders involves the assessment and treatment of people who have impaired communication which may include impaired language and/or motor speech. It is therefore important that Speech and Language Therapists have a sound and critical understanding around the theoretical underpinnings concerning the assessment and treatment of communication.

Aims
This module aims to provide students with the knowledge of the theory, assessment, and management of a range of acquired communication disorders including dysphasia and motor speech disorders.
Students will have opportunities to understand the typical linguistic characteristics which are typical of dysphasia, dysarthria and dyspraxia of speech diagnoses.
Students will be provided with opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding of the theory, assessment and management of a range of acquired communication disabilities, including dysphasia and motor speech disorders. Identifying etiological and prognostic factors in a range of acquired communication disorders will be considered and students will be given the opportunity to evaluate current approaches to assessment and management planning. Additionally, the module aims to explore the impact of acquired communication disorders on social relationships, social interaction, and culture surrounding everyday life.

Students are required to answer two questions from a choice of case studies detailing the linguistic characteristics of acquired speech and language disorders including relevant theoretical approached to intervention.
