Description for 2025/26

Speech and Language Therapists have an important role in the identification, assessment, and (re) habilitation of individuals with hearing impairments. This module provides you with knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms of speech, hearing and the management of people with hearing loss. You will gain a practical understanding of acoustic phonetics, audiology and deafness in line with the RCSLT curriculum.

Aims
This module aims to provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge of the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of speech sounds and will build on the knowledge gained in the first year of study. Students will be introduced to the structure and function of the of the peripheral hearing mechanisms & the auditory pathways, and to disorders of these structures. Current approaches to the assessment of hearing and balance will be considered as well as the management of hearing loss in children (hearing aids & cochlear implants). The assessment of communication skills and intervention in children with hearing impairment and cleft lip and/or palate and other craniofacial conditions will be considered.
