Description for 2025/26

Children with speech sound disorder and language difficulties/disorders form a large and important part of the clinical caseload for paediatric speech and language therapists. This module provides you with a variety of opportunities to gain requisite knowledge and understanding of diagnosis, assessment and management, of children with developmental speech and language disorders.

Aims
The module aims to examine the theoretical basis of, and the variety of approaches to, assessment and intervention for pre-school children with speech and language disorders. Distinguishing language difficulty from disorder will be considered as well as the impact of speech sound disorder on literacy.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Examine the roles and responsibilities of the speech and language therapist working with preschool children who present with speech, language and communication needs.: 1,2
Examine current approaches to assessment, differential diagnosis and intervention in speech sound disorders.: 1
Interpret speech sound disorder assessment data and solve clinical problems relating to differential diagnosis and intervention and communicate this information in an appropriate manner for a professional and non-professional audience.: 1
Judge current research in relation to the diagnosis, assessment and management of pre-school children presenting with language difficulties.: 2

Description of Module Assessment

1: Assignment weighted 50%
1300- word case study
A clinically relevant data-based case study. Students are supplied with assessment data, from a child with a speech sound disorder, which they must interpret, justify a speech target, plan intervention and provide a session plan for a carer. 1300 words

2: Exam weighted 50%
Unseen exam- 90 minutes
Students must answer two questions. One compulsory case study focusing on aspects of assessment and intervention. One theoretical essay question from a choice of two.
