This module will provide you with knowledge relating to typical language acquisition and the cognitive mechanisms and processes involved in language processing as well as psychological development across the lifespan. The ability to describe different theoretical approaches to the study of language development is a key skill developed in this module and is essential for understanding clinical concepts relating to speech and language disorders.
Aims
This module aims to give apprentices the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of typical language acquisition and the cognitive mechanisms and processes involved in language processing. Different theoretical approaches to language acquisition and development are explored. Early speech perception and production will also be considered. The typical sequence of psychological development and cognitive changes across the lifespan are examined. Additionally, psychosocial consequences of atypical language development are introduced.
Intended Learning Outcomes
