Description for 2026/27

This module develops your knowledge of image evaluation, adaptive imaging techniques and common pathology across projectional and cross-sectional imaging. This module explores how clinical history informs imaging decisions, image quality, artefact recognition, CT and MRI protocols, contrast use and the interpretation of common appearances on projectional, CT and MRI images.

Aims
The aim of this module is to develop your knowledge and understanding of image evaluation, adaptive imaging approaches and common pathological appearances across projectional and cross-sectional imaging. You will explore how clinical history and presentation inform imaging requests, additional techniques and protocol selection, while developing the ability to assess diagnostic image quality, recognise artefacts and identify common pathologies on projectional imaging, CT head and cervical spine, and MRI spine examinations.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Evaluate imaging requests and explain the appropriateness of additional and/or adaptive technique relevant to clinical history and presentation.: 1
Assess the diagnostic quality of images and identify common artefacts and techniques used to minimise their impact across both cross-sectional imaging specialities.: 1
Identify and describe common pathologies on projectional imaging, CT head, CT cervical spine and MRI spine.: 1
Identify the use of imaging planes, CT window levels, MRI sequences, imaging protocols and contrast administration in CT and MRI examinations.: 1

Description of Module Assessment

1: Exam weighted 100%
Computer Based Examination (90 Minutes)
A 90 Minute computer based examination undertaken under exam conditions. Students will sit this examination using specialist computers in the Jack Ashley Building and Darwin Building (where appropriate). Examples of question types within the exam includes (but are not limited to): Hot spot questions Matching Short Answer – free text responses Long Answer - providing descriptive comments for images provided. Questions will relate to the imaging modalities and techniques as outlined in the module intended learning outcomes.
