Description for 2023/24

This module forms part of the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme at Keele which is an innovative programme of study which prepares graduates for clinical practice in changing health and social care settings.
This module refines and advances earlier anatomy knowledge and focuses on upper limb and spinal pathologies. The student will learn patient assessment skills, management strategies and provision of P&O devices which may be associated with congenital, pathophysiological and trauma.

Aims
With a focus on assessment and management of service users presenting with less common/ more complex conditions of spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, the module will enable the student to:
Assess a service user with less common/more complex needs (upper limb and spine)
Analyse and integrate the assessment findings to identify the service user¿s problems/diagnosis
Apply knowledge and skills to formulate a relevant prescription and management plan
Propose an appropriate technical design and fabrication/supply of an upper limb prosthetic and spinal orthotic devices for a patient with a more complex upper limb or spinal condition
Evaluate when to modify treatment/ rectify a device when appropriate.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Critically assess the complexity of upper limb and spinal anatomy and biomechanics in the context of a prosthetic & orthotic (P&O) assessment and management plan.: 1
Synthesize and comply knowledge of pathophysiology to interpret a clinical presentation and justify the principles of management of service users with spinal/ upper limb conditions.: 1
Integrate findings from a P&O assessment to prescribe, design and critically justify an evidence-based client-centred treatment plan to meet the needs and goals of the service user.: 1
Discuss the capacity to critically evaluate and justify when to modify, progress or discontinue treatment appropriately.: 1
