Description for 2023/24

The module brings together the concepts of health promotion, primary and secondary prevention and health behaviour change, and provides a context for the study of prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation. Students explore the factors which affect health and wellbeing and also the theories, models and principles which underlie health behaviour change. Health promotion strategies are evaluated.

Aims
To deepen the student understanding of health promotion, primary and secondary prevention, and health behaviour change.
To provide a context for the study of rehabilitation.
To equip the student with the knowledge and skills to analyse health promotion strategies in the context of behaviour change theories, models and principles.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Explain the concept of health promotion, differentiating between primary and secondary prevention in the context of P&O practice: 1
Critically analyse the concepts and constructs of selected health behaviour change theories and models: 1
Critically evaluate the extent to which health behaviour change theories and models incorporate psychological, socioeconomic and environmental factors: 1
Critically discuss and analyse health promotion strategies in the context of relevant theories, models, and principles of behaviour change: 1

Study hours

30 hours of teaching include:
~27 hours of tutor-led hours which may include lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials
~03 hours of assessment preparation classes.

A 2500-word essay
The essay requires the student to: Explore the concept of health promotion, and illustrate the difference between primary and secondary prevention with reference to examples relevant to prosthetic and orthotic practice. Analyse a selected health promotion strategy/strategies in the context of relevant theories, models, and principles of behaviour change. Evaluate the effectiveness of the selected health promotion strategy.
