This module forms part of the MSc Physiotherapy programme at Keele which is an innovative programme of study which prepares the graduate for clinical practice in changing health and social care settings. The Advancing Assessment and Treatment Skills module builds upon both the Essentials of Physiotherapy Assessment and Foundations of Physiotherapy Management modules. You will develop your knowledge, skills and higher order clinical reasoning within several specialties of physiotherapy, including older adults, musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiovascular and respiratory practice.Teaching will be delivered by a blended approach with both in-situ, and online (asynchronous and synchronous) learning and teaching strategies to ensure that all required knowledge, evaluation and understanding of key principles in physiotherapy are delivered for all types of learners. The teaching and learning strategies will be adjusted for individuals as required by the academic tutors to ensure a student-facing learning environment.
Aims
To enable the student to integrate and synthesise material developed in the Essentials of Physiotherapy Assessment and Foundations of Physiotherapy Management, in order to enable students to comprehensively assess and treat patients in specialist areas of practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes
Apply underpinning knowledge of pathophysiology to interpret the clinical presentation of specific populations/ conditions: 1Synthesise findings from a subjective and objective assessment in order to formulate and deliver an evidence based patient centred treatment plan: 1Based on the analysis of case scenarios, evaluate the effectiveness and justify the choice of selected interventions, demonstrate the capacity to modify, progress or discontinue treatment appropriately: 1Critically discuss the therapeutic effects of the interventions selected: 1Demonstrate relevant assessment and treatment techniques, formulated as needed, according to analysis of the case scenarios, with appropriate justification: 1
Active learning hours: 55Typically this would include: - 14.5 hours of lectures - 30 hours of practical skills-1.5 hours seminars- 1.5 hours of tutorials- 7.5 assessment preparation - 95 hours of independent studyTypically 10 hours of directed study and 85 hours of independent study
Description of Module Assessment
1: Viva weighted 100%Interactive Practical Viva 30 minute viva, incorporating an exploratory discussion including clinical reasoning, theoretical underpinning and integration of current evidence in justifying the management approach for a specific population/condition based on the selected seen case scenario and a practical demonstration of skills (to include a selection of assessment and/or treatment strategies dependent upon the requirements of the case scenario).
Case scenarios will be related to one of the specialities covered in the module: the paediatric patient, mental health, older adults, frailty and falls, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular respiratory or neurology. Each case will be introduced and discussed formatively within the module.
