This module aims to increase both depth and breadth of the student's ability to manage pro-actively acute respiratory deterioration and the complications of critical illness. This is done through learning activities based around the development of advanced problem solving skills in the assessment and management of respiratory problems. This will be facilitated by workshops in the use of mechanical support, case based learning in small groups and an emphasis on wider reading of the literature to support choices. The module is structured around 2 main topics1. The management of acute respiratory deterioration of patients (on call) [2 days] is also available for CPD only opportunity. It aims to give students understanding and confidence to manage on call scenarios.2. The management of patients requiring invasive or non-invasive ventilation including rehabilitation [2 days] is also available for CPD only. It aims to give students understanding and confidence to manage ventilated patient scenarios.
Aims
The module aims to enhance the student's evidence based knowledge and skills in assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating effective care to acutely deteriorating patients for example in 'on-call' situations. The module also aims to extend the student's critical care evidence-based knowledge and skills in assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating cardio-respiratory care which is integrated with comprehensive rehabilitation programme.
Intended Learning Outcomes
formulate and communicate/discuss a clinical diagnosis in acute deterioration of cardio-respiratory system and/or complications of critical illness; will be achieved by assessments: 1critically evaluate and synthesise current evidence to support clinical decisions and management choices in the application of respiratory physiotherapy with spontaneously breathing and ventilated patients; will be achieved by assessments: 1evaluate the assistive technologies used in the management of acute respiratory deterioration and critical illness; will be achieved by assessments: 1select, justify and evaluate appropriate outcome measures for acute respiratory problems; will be achieved by assessments: 1create, justify and evaluate a programme of rehabilitation to facilitate function, activity and participation following critical illness; will be achieved by assessments: 1

Description of Module Assessment
1: Oral Exam weighted 100%30 minute oral examinationOral examination which will be conducted by 2 examiners, in conjunction with a set of predetermined criteria, based on a case study (provided by the module team 6 weeks in advance); 10 days before the examination, students will be required to submit 1000 word account of the clinical reasoning underpinning their diagnosis of the cardio-respiratory problem(s) in the case. The oral examination will explore each student's depth of analysis of the case, clinical reasoning and diagnosis, evaluation of management strategies including assistive technologies and or complex context (i.e. critical care unit), and critically evaluate outcome measures appropriate to the case.
