Description for 2023/24

This module forms part of the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme at Keele which is an innovative programme of study which prepares the graduate for clinical practice in changing health and social care settings.
Practice Placement 5 builds on content introduced in Year 1 of the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme and the students previous placements. The placement module enables the student, through P&O practice experience, to further develop and apply and enhance comprehension and skills, with an increasing focus on clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice, in both assessment and service user management approaches.
The module aims to prepare the student to work in diverse healthcare settings whilst also develop transferable skills (i.e. multidisciplinary team working, leadership and professional communication) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialties.

Aims
This module aims to:
1. Provide students with another opportunity through a P&O practice placement to further develop and refine their communication
2. Apply their comprehension of the evidence base and skills in both P&O assessment and management approaches.

3. Develop P&O-specific skills to effectively and efficiently assess and critically evaluate patient/client interventions in a relevant external setting.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Contribute effectively to service user integrated care by evaluating and demonstrating effective communication skills with service users, carers and members of the inter-professional team: 1
Perform and modify (when necessary) an assessment, and subsequently identify a (prioritized) problem list to meet individual service users¿ needs (with supervision appropriate to the student¿s stage of learning): 1
Develop clinical reasoning skills to differentiate between diagnoses, evaluate the P&O evidence base and critically analyse the effectiveness of different P&O interventions: 1
Handle and record service user information in accordance with professional and regulatory body guidance/requirements, placement base policies, legal and ethical frameworks: 1
Pro-actively demonstrate self management skills by directing and managing own learning on placement; planning, organising and prioritising work/ placement activities as well as more complex tasks: 1
Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students and BAPO Standards of Best Practice.: 1

Study hours

tutor-led hours which includes:
~ 2 hours preparation lectures including, workshops, seminars, tutorials
~ 2 hours placement debrief lectures
Guided Independent Study:
~4 hours guided evidence-based literature
225 hours of placement learning
Students will be expected to undertake self-directed study throughout the placement.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Workbook weighted 20%
Work book of anonymised service user scenarios
The student will further enhance the work-book started on Practice Placement POP 2 and POP 4, so that by the end of POP 5, an additional 6 anonymised service user case scenarios are completed with particular focus on rehabilitation in P&O and the critical appraisal of evidence associated with innovative P&O assessment/ management approaches.
